Here are a few with inside mount...

Here are a few images of shades hung high, a nice option if your windows lack casings or if your window is located well below the ceiling... My Home Ideas
In order for this to work, the molding should be completely covered when the shades are closed like you see in the above image.

When it comes down to it, I think it really depends on the trim detail, ceiling height, and overall look you are trying to achieve. Do you have a preference?
Inside! It breaks my heart to cover up beautiful trim work...so having said that, if the windows didn't have trim, I'd install them outside the window frame. Janell
ReplyDeleteI agree with Janell. Depends on the trim. I love the bed cover in the last shot. No need for a dust ruffle!
ReplyDeleteRene, I have done it both ways, I just put new ones up and I put them on the outside this time, I do not have trim around the widows so I thought it looked better out.. I will hang the curtains this fall...

I recently had to contemplate this exact thing. I decided to hang the blind high as the window is squat and wide; this helped to give the window some height.
ReplyDeleteI think I like them inside mount best-- those CL images are some of my favorite rooms!
ReplyDeleteI think they look beautiful inside. But if the window lacks casing, then high and above is the way to go. Might as well extend the height of the window if you are not mounting them inside. Fun post, Rene.
ReplyDeleteI love them inside mounted, but agree that some windows benefit from the added height of a high outside mount. Beautiful images! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI definitely think both ways can look equally good depending on a number of things that you mention (ie window trim, ceiling height, etc). Personally, I would not do an outside mount unless I was also going to do curtains for the window.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to seeing updated pics of your living room!
I have them in my living and dining room and in both cases they are mounted inside the molding. It would be a shame to cover it up!!! Trim work is one of the best parts of owning an old home, in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteInside the molding, unless it is a room, perhaps a sun porch where there is no beautiful molding!

My husband wasn't about to cover up our trim that cost a fortune!
ReplyDeleteInside, inside, inside... Unless the windows lack casings.
ReplyDeleteI have them throughout my house installed inside, however I have a triple casement window in my living room with really puny casements separating the three windows making it hard to install this way.
ReplyDeleteAny suggestions?? One large shade that's 88" (the overall width of window) would cost me a fortune and I'm afraid three smaller ones mounted on the outside would look strange...
I wouldn't want to cover any trim work but for windows that don't have trim than outside for sure. On a side note - I love that pic with the table and chairs behind the sofa in lieu of a console table - love that idea!
ReplyDeleteDEFINITELY prefer inside mount.
ReplyDeleteI actually just mounted some in my living room. I'll be posting about it soon, but we chose the inside mount and I love the way it looks!
ReplyDeleteOh yes, inside the window if at all possible to show off the trim. But I like the examples you found of windows with no trim--make sense to hang them wide and high for those. But any way they are hung, you know I LOVE my bamboo shades.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I love the way it looks to hang the blinds inside the trim, the problem with bamboo blinds is that they don't fully retract, thus blocking out some of the light and the view. My preference is for light over trim. Plus, hanging them high give the illusion of a larger window. I plan to hang my bamboo blinds in the kitchen high and wide enough to cover the trim. Really interesting, thought-provoking post.

I have them mounted inside in my living room because I love my trim. I love the look of bamboo alone and with curtains...my curtains are sort of simple and elegant and it makes a nice juxtaposition wit the blinds. I love all these images, the last bedroom is gorgeous!!

I know that Joni @Cote de Texas recommends "hanging them high" to the ceiling but all of mine are mounted inside. I'm not sure if I would cover up beautiful molding (if I had any) so the inside mount works for me.
ReplyDeleteSome really good suggestions in all the above comments.

This is such perfect timing that this post popped up in my reader. I'm struggling with this very issue. We have our current shades hung inside and I love them.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunatly, our new house interior window trim won't allow it. (Not straight to mount.) I really hate to cover all the trim though... it's original to the 1893 home and quite lovely. Ugh.
Thank you for all of your feedback! I agree, let the pretty wood show, but there are times when hanging a shade above the window at ceiling height is the better option. Camille, I was happy to hear that you are planning this for your kitchen because I recently recommended this same treatment to a client. When the shade is open (97% of the time) the wood shows and also allows maximum light to enter the room.
ReplyDeleteErin & Kim, if you send me a picture, I will post it and get everyone's feedback.
Thank you guys!
i just could not see paying the price to have the shades made to size for inside hanging.....my home is very old and no 2 windows are the same...well almost no 2....so i went woth outside and at less then 15 bucks a window.....compared to 40 plus i am ok with that.
ReplyDeleteI agree with many of the other viewers ... inside if the window has nice trim work, outside if no trim work. But hanging the shades inside a window without trim would give it a modern look, so it depends. We have nice, wide trim around our 1920's windows, so we hang ours inside. I love bamboo shades! I look forward to seeing yours.

I would agree with everybody else that inside is better but some may not have that luxury and have to hang them on the outside. For instance my mother in law has a new home and the depth of the inside of her windows is too shallow for her to hand blinds on the inside.
ReplyDeleteI love them up high!
ReplyDeleteCould anyone please let me know if they have found cordless roman bamboo shades? Thanks so much :-)

I think both ways...in my son's room which I just posted about, I hung them on the inside as I wanted the two small windows on either side of his bed to be the same height as the larger window with drapes. I understand the optical illusion of having a taller ceiling if you hang them high (they are also more expensive as they are larger).
ReplyDeleteI'm looking for an armoire that is painted a light blue color in the top photo. It looks like a birdcage. What are they called?
