Roller Shades - Some Lovely & Funny Inspiration

Tuesday, May 10, 2011

Let's pretend for a moment that the rectangles are shades and the squiggly lines to the right of the sink are open shelves.  Let's also pretend that the bead board back splash is finished.   While we are at it, let's just say that the walls are a nice gray.
In an earlier post, I shared some lovely Roman shades in kitchens and thought that maybe this would be a good option for our kitchen.  The other day the new rug arrived Joss & Main and now I am trying to decide on fabric.  The other thing I am considering is possibly covering roller shades with fabric instead of making three Roman shades.  I believe it would be much easier and realistically, the shades are going to remain in the up position most of the time.  Here are a couple of the roller shade projects that inspire me.

I cannot let this opportunity pass without sharing Lakeitha's roller shade project which made me lol.  I really appreciate her honesty in that post.  We all have those moments - thanks for that Lakeitha!

Here is where I would love your input.  I have a few fabric choices and wonder what you think.  The walls are going to be painted.  So pretend they aren't green.

Yesterday, I found another fabric that I love even more than these.  It is a chartreuse with white flowers and I have a side table in the kitchen that I would like to paint peacock blue.  My computer isn't co-operating or I would share  a picture of the swatch with you.  What do you think?  Do any of those fabrics speak to you?

  1. Rene, when I saw your tweet, I KNEW you mentioned my roller shade project! I really think that thing was out to get me from the very beginning!

I like fabric choice #2! I saw it in blue and wanted it and green is naturally my next choice!

Keep us posted with the other fabric!

  2. Lakeitha, I really love that you shared this! So many projects end up this way and often we don't share them. Thank you for keeping it real :)

  3. I like fabric #2. I think you might be happier with a Roman Shade. If you are going to open and close it a lot, the roller shades durability comes into question.

  4. The industrial cottage, I'm not a fan of roller shades either, but these will not be opened and closed at all which is why I'm considering a roller shade.

  5. My favorites are 2, 3 & 5. Think #1 will make you dizzy while you wash dishes. Love the picture of Lakeitha's shade....too funny. That's the way a majority of my projects turn out....this is the reason I do not yet have a blog!

  6. My fav is fabric # 3, BUT you just said you found another fabric with chartreuse and I think that would be my ultimate favorite...even without seeing it, that gets my vote. Can't wait to see what you do with the space!

  7. I'm diggin' option #1. Fun and modern with that splash of color that every white kitchen needs. Good luck! Can't wait to see it.

  8. Hey Rene,
I'm liking number 1 right now, but I'm also on a gray kick right. Lol. I like the roller shade idea. I'm looking for a new curtain of something for my kitchen too but don't think my window is long enough for a shade. Can't wait to see what you decide. I always love what you do to your home.

    Have a great day.

  9. i looove number 2! as in the fabric. ;)
and i still need your address for my lonly elephant. you know they travel in groups,, and well, he is sad.

  10. I gotta go check out that funny post! I say fabric 5 or that one you didn't share. Just because the color sounds great with the peacock blue you want to use. Black and white will allow the other colors to stand out :)You have a beautiful kitchen! Can't wait to see it with the shades!

  11. #2 without a doubt! What a beautiful moire-type print! And I appreciate that you are being realistic in terms of time and practicality. If a roller shade would suit your needs best, go for it! I'm sure it will be gorgeous and we'll all learn so much from your (future) tutorial.

  12. I love #1! This is SUCH a simple project...the results will be fabulous!

  13. Haha, yes, Lakeitha's post had me laughing too :) The window over your sink is just gorgeous! I'm liking #3 and #5. Can't wait to see how it all turns out - I know it's going to be FAB!

  14. I like the idea of the roller shades to add some texture and color. I am not in love with any of the fabrics although they are all nice. I love your rug.

  15. Oh, I love the rug. The kitchen is coming together! I love number one but it sounds like you have found the one you really love. Can't wait to see it!

  16. Your kitchen is wonderful just the way it is! But I know (from experience) that udates are important for the keeping things current.

Putting shades or a roman style blind on those windows seem like a great idea! As a matter of fact you might have just helped me in your thinking outloud process. Thanks! I was going to put a rolled shade in a rattan up, but I see your gorgeous options and it has me thinking.

Beadboard back splashes are so classic and add a wonderful inviting feel to a kitchen. Great choice! I hope you will share the open shelving when you are done. It all sounds beautiful!
Now wonder I make this a daily stop, I leave inspired!

  17. My favorite it the graphic stripey yellow fabric -- the first. It would look so punchy and fun and bright in the kitchen. And it's different than anything I've ever seen. On the other hand chartreuse with peacock blue sounds pretty amazing too!

  18. I love #3 but the additional one you described sounds right up my alley!

  19. I love #3! and #2 is a very close second ... I think having green fabric on the roller shades would really draw your eye further to the natural green elements outside, too. can't wait to see what you decide! i know it will be fabulous!

  20. For me number 2 is it.... with the last one coming in at a distant second! I am loving that fresh green right now!

  21. Thanks for your feedback! I made my purchase today. Stay tuned :)

  22. I can already picture #5 with the blue table - can't wait to see what you surprise us with! Off to check out Lakeitha's project! :)

  23. Love #5...but I am really into chartreuse lately, too.

  24. I'm a little late to the party...can't wait to see what you chose Rene...Liking the sounds of the one you didn't show, but also love #1 and #2!

  25. I vote for #4
    & #5, but maybe
    in a pop of color.
    I LOVE this idea.
    I've been toying
    with Roman shades
    for my daughter's
    room, but it would
    be for two wide
    corner windows and
    the shades would be
    cumbersome. This
    might be the perfect
    solution and much
    more practical. As
    always, I love that
    you've scouted up
    such great solutions,
    xx Suzanne

  26. Chartreuse + peacock blue. Colorwise, we are totally channelling each other, Rene! Yay!
