What We Watched This Summer

I'll be honest, most summer nights you'll find me outside listening to music.  Once the heat and mosquitoes take over, you might just find me parked on the couch watching my latest tv obsession.  R & I found a few new favorites & caught up on some old ones over the summer. Below is what we watched and by all means, please leave a comment if there's something you'd like to recommend.

Ozark - Let's just say that once we started watching this one, we were hooked. Hurry up season two. If you liked Breaking Bad, you'll most likely like Ozark.  The story is based on Marty (Jason Bateman) who goes from financial adviser to 'in above his head'.  Marty and his family of four are forced to move to the Ozarks and launder money in order to pay back a drug lord.  We were pretty excited to see Mike Tourek who used to work at one of our favorite restaurants acting as Ash. Congrats Big Mike!

Amy - A Netflix documentary based on the life of Amy Winehouse.  It was both inspiring and heartbreaking to watch a young girl go from aspiring singer/song writer to famous in what seemed like the blink of an eye.  Amy's roller coaster journey in and out of addiction, while painful to watch, gave me a new appreciation for her music.  I liked that the film used actual footage from her life including scenes from the Grammy Awards, rocky relationships, and a recording session with Tony Bennett.

Aquarius - It would be safe to say that my fascination of cults began back in the 70's with Helter Skelter and the Charlie Manson family.  Aquarius is loosely based on events that took place during this time.  I've also been a fan of David Duchovny since the days of the X-Files and he is killer in this series.  Anxiously awaiting season three.

Master Of None - R and I agree that Master of None has filled a huge comedy void in our lives. Each episode is around 30 minutes which is perfect if you want to watch a quickie or if you want to watch 5 back-to-back episodes, lol.  Dev's daily encounters with his circle of friends remind me a bit of Seinfeld.  ***We are only on episode 3.

Narcos - Season three started this summer and so far it has not disappointed.  In case you're unfamiliar with the story line, Narcos is loosely based on the Columbian drug cartel from the 80's. A new empire takes over in season three.  It's a bit of an adjustment getting used to Pablo Escobar's absence, but I was hooked after the opeing scene.

The Keepers - This is a docuseries that takes a look into the events that lead to the murder of Sister Catherine Cesnik, a then student of Keough High School, an all girl Catholic school in Baltimore, Maryland.

  3. We watched the 4th season of House of Cards on Netflix this summer. Gripping! Like you, I also found the documentary about Amy Winehouse heartbreaking. She was so talented. Thanks for the tip on Master of None. Aziz Ansari is very funny. I'll have to check that series out. I am looking forward to the next seasons of our faves: Homeland, The Americans and House of Cards.

  5. going to have to try aquarius. i've just started watching marcella, it's a british series about a detective and her obsession with an unsolved serial killer murders that start to happen again. it also has a side story about her involvement in another killing. i loved atypical, about an autistic teen and his family but it's so much more than that. it's excellent.
