Z: The Beginning of Everything is a documentary series based on Zelda Fitzgerald, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s wife. Christina Ricci does an amazing job playing Zelda, a Southern belle well ahead of her time. I’ve always been intrigued by the 20’s with it’s fashion, jazz, and speakeasies. R and I flew through season one in no time and can’t wait to see the next season.
I especially enjoyed episode seven where Zelda and Scott moved into a beach cottage in Westport. Although there was all sorts of drama (and I do mean drama 🙊) going on in this episode, I fell in love with the house.
The cottage was empty upon arrival, but you can see the charm and the “good bones” especially considering the time period.
How fun is the wall paper and what about those painted floors?!
It wasn’t long before furniture was delivered and the house looked more like a home. I was drooling over those darling green love seats!
A few more images of the living room. Everything is so open and airy in shades of green and blue.
Love the coastal painting and colorful lamps.
Also, love the botanical and audobon prints. Let us not forget the wicker and rattan furniture in natural tones.
Here’s the same room in full on party mode. Everyone was so well dressed back then.
Moving on to the master bedroom. More pretty lamps. Also, shiplap.
How beautiful is that faux bamboo dresser? ! I would take it right now as is!
The kitchen (though it needed a huge upgrade) had a few timeless details that jumped out at me – reed shades, wooden counters, beadboard, and shaker style cabinet fronts.
More shiplap in the breakfast room – this time in its natural state. Natural shiplap is pretty in a beach house when everything else (trim, floors, etc.) is light.
I thought it would be fun to pull together a few things to re-create the look of the Fitzgerald Westport home with a “modern day” twist.

I loved the cottage too-so timeless ! It was a great series…of course when I went and looked up how her life went…it is all really sad.

It's been a while since I studied F. Scott Fitzgerald and had completely forgotten about Zelda's life until I started watching the series.

A huge thank you for highlighting this series. I just finished the book and while sometimes sad, I loved this mini series and I'm already excited for part two.
