Steal Her Style | How to Dress Like Joanna Gaines

Tuesday, February 3, 2015

Joanna Gaines needs no introduction, but just in case you're like me and recently mastered the remote control, she is the co-star of the HGTV hit Fixer Upper.  Joanna has a very laid back style. Comfortable yet chic.  Bohemian yet polished.  Classic yet modern.  I've been stalking her watching the show religiously and I'm not sure which I enjoy more - her outfits and hair or which wall(s) she will decide to remove in each home.

Joanna admits openly to only owning 2 pairs of jeans, although I 'm pretty sure she has recently added a new pair or two.  She tends to avoid patterns, wears mostly neutrals, relies on scarves and jewelry to complete an outfit, and her signature nail color is "You Don't Know Jacques".  She is a big believer in investing in a few good pieces and keeps her overall look simple.  By the way, this approach to wardrobe building simplifies getting dressed in the morning and I'm all for that!

  2. I love this show because it's obvious that Chip and Joanna work well together, she has her own style and isn't afraid to show it, and there's no drama ... obstacles are overcome, as they are in any renovation project, and the show moves on.

  3. i love the show and i love both of them. they are the perfect (appearing) couple. Very positive role models. However, if she's paying $200 for a pair of jeans, no wonder she only has a couple pair.

    1. Believe me, the goods ones are worth the investment. I'm down to two pairs myself :).

    2. The difference between a $20 pair of jeans and a $200 pair is huge. I pay that much for my jeans because I want quality pieces that are made in America, therefore I don't have to contribute to unfair labor conditions in Southeast Asia, where most cheap jeans are made. But once cry once.

    3. 100% Agreed - Quality is obvious, as well as fit. Rather have 4 pair of $$$ jeans, than 100 cheap ones. I buy, rip/cut/alter 4 personal style. USA made always - ❤

  4. She has great style and I always love seeing how they can transform a home. My favorite part is the end where she is adding all of the "pretties"!!

    1. Agreed! I like that part too and only which it was as easy as it looks to remove walls.

  7. Just recently was introduce to Fixer Upper and can't get enough! I've been watching all the past episodes in bed. Now all I dream about are removing walls and can't stop thinking of what walls I can remove in my home and now want to redo my kitchen. LOL.
Love Joanna's relaxed style... you nailed! Completely agree on what a good pair of jeans can do!

  10. Any chance you can find the skirt that JoJo wore most recently on an episode called "Almost Empty Nesters want a water front home". It was a tie-dye black and white skirt. Love her style and love the show!!

    1. Hi Mary. I've added a couple of skirts to the post that look very similar. Several people have asked me about this - so thank you for the reminder. Look in the "a few other pieces to steal her style" section. Hope this helps.

  13. Any chance you know where Jojo got her dress she wore on the episode where they rehabbed for the coffee shop couple? I think it was season 2, episode 1. LOVE that dress. It is a maxi with cap sleeves and it looks oh so comfy!

    1. Yes please find this for us! Grey top, slight cap sleeves with a flowing black bottom.

    2. I think I found it. The only difference is the color is light gray on top and charcoal on the bottom. See "a few other pieces to steal her style" above.

  15. LOVE her. Thanks for sharing. I think another thing worth noting if attempting to mimic her style is the fit. She tends to wear tops fairly roomy and not very fitted. I've learned to order one size up from my "regular" size to achieve a look like hers.

    1. Great point! I'm noticing that even more this season. :)

  17. Do you happen to know what kind of hooded jean jacket she has worn...I think it was in the same episode as above. She also has a green plaid shirt I'm wondering about, but I don't know what episode. She did wear it to a Baylor game that was posted on Instagram.

    1. I believe she wears the jean vest over a hooded sweater or sweatshirt and I'm not sure about the plaid shirt. I'll try to find images so I can search for them both.

    2. The jacket looks similar to one offered by free people, but I can't tell if they are the same. The only image I can find on the shirt is one on hers and chips Instagram.

  18. Do you happen to know what the hooded Jean vest jacket she wears is? Also, she has a green and maybe yellowish/goldish plaid button down she has worn on the show but not sure what episode. It's on her Instagram when they went to a Baylor game. She is just so cute.

    1. How about one of these for the vest? I'm not finding the plaid, but if you know the season & episode I can try to look again. Hope this helps.

    2. Yes I am fairly sure it is a free people jacket that you put a link for. Macy's has them as well do a few other stores. The green plaid shirt is from a brand called Bella Dahl and it was called olive night. She also has a plaid from a brand called cloth and stone. So there are those in case anyone is looking for some plaids similar to hers

    2. The black jacket (if it's the hooded one) is from Lululemon. I know because I also own it. It is super cute with a faint leopard print that is black on black and has a cute tie in the back with ruffle trim. I cannot for the life of me remember what it is called but it is definitely Lulu. Pretty sure they don't sell it anymore - it was from last year. If I find it online, I'll come back here and post the name.

    3. I found it! It is called the Spring Fling Puffy Windbreaker. Doesn't look like it's currently for sale but you might be able to find it on resale sites. I love mine but it does run small.

  34. That necklace is similar, the difference, if I remember correctly is that the stone appears to be floating and doesn't have the prongs. It's a good second choice, and maybe the original will turn up. Thanks for all the help scouting it out...

  37. I'm with Sharon. I LOVE the white hi low sleeveless dress she wore in the newlywed, little house on the prairie (episode 1). Any idea where to find a similar dress? It looks very Free People but I can't find anything similar. Maybe because it is from a couple of years ago?! So classic, though.

  44. Looking for the navy blue jacket with brown/rust trim Joanna wore on the older episode with the 2 twin sisters - the sister buying the house is a foster mom - house design with green living room walls and black and white fireplace tile. Love that blue jacket (of course Joanna makes everything look great ;)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Do you know the brand or have a link to the navy blue jacket with brown/rust trim that Joanna wore on the episode with the twin sisters? It has a tiny pocket on a sleeve. The interior design plan on that episode features green living room walls with a black and white geometric fireplace tile & Joanna calls Chips shirt-jacket a shaket or something cute like that. :-) thanks!!

  46. Does anyone know where I can get the red hooded jacket Jo wore on the episode where she did a house for a gal and her son, along with her mother. The gal was a rocket scientist. Jo had a sign made over her fireplace that said "I love you to the moon and back". The jacket had a hood and was belted, it had a nice flowing shape to it, not stiff.
