Remove the Doors For Open Shelving

Friday, September 7, 2012

For several years we have considered adding open shelving to our kitchen.  Last year we decided to remove the cabinet doors from one of the cabinets just to get a feel for how we liked it.  This is a great way to experiment without spending a dime.  I really do like the look and now we are marching forward with the real thing.  I purchased brackets which have been painted and are ready to hang.  This weekend we will finish the installation and hopefully on Monday I will have pictures to share.

In the mean time, here are a few great examples of how removing a door or two can really add to the charm of a kitchen.

  3. I have to say that I am really enjoying ours. I wasn't sure at first but I think it forces me to be a little neater and opens up our kitchen :)

  6. Such a great idea - and it's free! We removed a small portion of our kitchen cabs when we updated our kitchen but the hubby has yet to hang my shelves. We have rather long list...

  7. can't wait to see! make sure you source your brackets... I've been searching around online for some for our office shelving but haven't found anything even close to what I'm looking for.

  8. Love how you tested
    the idea, Rene, as it
    really isn't for everyone.
I think the key is to
    actually use the items
    on display, often, or
    they get dusty, fast.
    We went with open
    shelving in our Butler's
    pantry, which is how
    I know about the dust : )

    Would love to take the
    plunge in the kitchen
    and will be anxious to
    see your big reveal!

    Happy Weekend,

  9. We took the doors off our upper cabinets and added brackets 2 years ago and I haven't regretted it for a moment or looked back once. I LOVE it! Can't wait to see how yours turn out!

  10. I love the look of open cabinets and cannot wait to see the final product.

A questions for you, I just moved into a new apartment in Chicago where the kitchen itself is big, but there are only 2 full size upper cabinets(1 is on a corner) and then there are 2 smaller square upper cabinets over the refrigerator and stove. If I took off the door fronts would it look stupid or purposeful?

  11. Hillary,

I would have to see a picture to really know. Wonder if you could use the space above the fridge for books? Or maybe just take the doors off one of the larger cabinet and use for everyday glasses or dishes. Then again, if you only have a few cabinets, you might need the storage to hide the ugly stuff that we all have plenty of :).

  13. I love the open shelving too and have incorporated it a bit into my kitchen. Even with one shelf of dishes in the open, its amazing how refreshing it can be!
    Looking forward to seeing yours!

  15. I took the doors off two of my cabinets a few years ago and never looked back. It immediately opened up the kitchen and made me like it sooo much more. I'd like to do a couple more but as it is...I only use the open ones for display and I can't afford to lose more valuable storage space but I advise everyone to do this to their kitchen. Just take those doors off!

  16. I can't wait to see the new look of yours. I think it would help me be a little neater too. I was in Target today and I would really like to replace our mismatched items in the kitchen with white pieces (and they're so inexpensive at Target too) - like our butter dish, and other random items. It looks so nice when they're that neutral white.
