What to do on the Walls

Monday, April 23, 2012

Now that the walls in our stairway have been painted I am wondering where to go from here.  Stairways are a great place for family photos.  I especially love the clean, uniform look of black or white frames on white walls.  Here a few great examples...

What do you think?  Do you like to see art/photography in staircases or do you prefer nothing at all?

  1. LOVE this look but have been too scared to implement it. Our walls are brick and plaster so there's not much room for error. One day I will bite the bullet and just do it! It's such a great way to display family photos!

  2. I absolutely love it. I think it can look so sophisticated and meaningful. Can't wait to see what you decide to do.

  3. Makes a home feel homier, that's for sure. I especially like when the frame and color of the pictures (for me, black and white) are identical. Looking forward to seeing what you decide to do!

  4. I don't have a staircase in my home but I am thinking of taking down a big mirror in the hall and making a gallery wall.

  5. I love this look too. We collect art prints from each place we travel to and they are displayed on the wall going up the stairs. Since it's such a big space, it's easy to add to over the years. Can't wait to see what you do.

  7. I love the staircase gallery wall thing. Though I kind of think less is more and much more practical for real life. The top picture is my favorite.

We only have basement stairs, but I have plans to one day do it up with pictures from vacations and family photos both old and new.

  8. I'm just starting to think about my own staircase wall. I love the look of the wood frames with a few gold ones mixed in. Thanks for the inspiration!

  9. In our last two homes we had black framed, white matted family photos covering the walls to our lower levels. Our guests used to spend ages going downstairs! It is a great way to display photos en masse and is dramatic grouped together in a small space like a stairwell. Fun, interesting and pulled together.

  10. Yup, I like it. These days I am more into leaning towards mixing up frame styles and sizes, rather than having everything exactly the same.

  12. Love this look and have been adding to our walls every now and then. I just recently put up a framed picture of my grandfather when he played semi pro baseball. The memories and smiles every time you walk on the stairs is priceless!

  13. Honestly, I think it depends totally on the space in relation to the other walls and what's going on in the foyer. Personally, I like the first and last photos the best. They are not as busy as the others. I'm absolutely a fan of uniform frames kept simple so as not to detract from the subject.

  14. A beautiful way to display family photos or fine art photography! I also agree with Kim...

I am featuring Designer and Paper Artist Anita Rivera from Castle Crown and Cottages on my site! She is amazing!

  16. I love the way photo galleries look in a stairwell! It gives you a reason to pause in what would otherwise be a thoroughfare. Terrific inspiration images! Thanks for sharing.

  17. I think stairwells are the perfect setting for gallery walls...I like the idea of uniform frames...definitely a less busier look....

  18. I think there is nothing better than a home full of family photos. Our dining room wall has two picture ledges stock full of photos, and I'm telling you, it is the very first thing people look at when they come to my house. So yes, I like the look -- the stair wall is a perfect place for such a thing.
