simple is beautiful

A Project Update

Friday, July 29, 2011

I finally finished the black table that I posted about here.  When I told you about it, many of you thought I should take the plunge and go with a bold color and I agreed.  Well, I tried it and it didn't work.  Let me re-phrase that - my guys didn't like it.

Do you see my helper?

They thought going with a green was too random.  Maybe a different green would have worked better, but I decided to go with my original plan and paint the table black.

Here it is in its new spot under the window.  I really like the new layout of our living room, by the way.  I think even my husband would agree that this is the most content I have ever been in this room.  And I'm sure his fingers are crossed that it stays this way.  The key was getting rid of the big armoire and mounting the TV above the mantle.  I fought it for years, but when it came down to it - with limited space and many doors, windows, and stairs to contend with - this was the way to go.  You may have also noticed that the striped curtains are gone.  They sold in the yard sale last weekend and have since been replaced with simple linen curtains from Ikea.  Much better.

Thanks for stopping by today.  I don't say it often enough, but thank you for making this one of your regular stops.  With the millions of blogs out there to choose from, I am very grateful that you choose to hang out here.

Happy weekend!

  1. you have to go with what feels "right" to you. i have "tried on" colors that i loved elsewhere but they haven't worked for me. i think the black is classic and suits you well.
and wow, i am all about "air quotations" (imagine my fingers up and making them) today! :)

  11. Such pretty lines on that table...and it looks perfect black.
I had to laugh a bit because I have been thinking of painting a dresser in the hallway a fun new color but I have a good feeling I would be in the same situation as you were. Love the new drapes too, I will be checking those out for our bedroom redo.

  13. I really like the choice to go with black rather than a color. Black really highlights the silhouette--which is so special.

    Have a great weekend, Rene!

  14. Black is always wonderful. I mounted my TV over my mantel too. I also have doors and windows everywhere. I could never make the room flow properly. Now it's much better and I don't know why I didn't do it sooner. Have good weekend! Oh and love the new window panels.

  15. As much as we'd like to pretend that our guys are not in charge of the decorating, they still have to live in the house with us, right? My husband occasionally exercises his veto power and I try to respect that. Love the black. Your guys made the right choice!

  17. I think the black is perfect, Rene. I have gone through the same thing. I painted a little side table in a fun bold color and it just did not work in our space. I needed to stick to classic ivory for it. Love your new curtains. too. I'm off to Ikea this weekend.

  18. great table. i must have missed the first post - but i like the black more than the green - but i have to tell you the first color that my brain popped to for that table was raspberry! No idea why. But it's lovely in black. Very smart looking.

  19. I've just been bouncing around the blogosphere tonight and found your blog. I'm sure I must have been by before, but I love it! And your table looks fabulous. I just recently covered a parson's table in grasscloth and went round and round with possibilities. Fun but exhausting. You should stop by and see it. http://myinteriorlife.blogspot.com/2011/07/mission-almost-accomplished.html

  23. It's beautiful! I think I would have gone around in the same circles over the color as you did. It looks really elegant and the black allows the slight green in the hydrangeas to really stand out :)

  24. Hi Rene, just catching up after being away on vacation. Love your new bright and light drapes and the bamboo shades (that I see you've hung at the window height - I like that contrast with the curtains hung higher!) I loved the striped curtains but the new ones are so breezy and the table is perfect in there. Hope you enjoy the room and enjoy lots of time in there with your "boys"!

  25. It turned out beautiful Rene!! At least you tried the bold color, it is only paint, at least that is what I say to myself. :) I like the black as well, it flows perfectly in that room. Love the new drapes too, your room is light and airy and gorgeous.
