Orchids & Moss

Tuesday, January 25, 2011

Winter months can be so long and flowers can really brighten a room.  Orchids are available at most grocery stores and home improvement centers.  Sometimes I find orchids in full bloom at Costco.  When I buy them from the store they usually look like this.  Not bad.

These clips remind me of a hair bow used on a little show dog.  Orchids do need support, but what I normally do is remove the clip and wrap the stem in moss.

I usually use sheet moss, but this time reindeer moss was what I had on hand.  Finally I hold the moss and orchid in place with raffia.  Much better.

  1. what a great idea! I just bought two orchids for my office and those clips just drive me insane! This is a great way to offer the orchids support in a more organic style.

  2. Rene, perfect timing. So pretty! I am contemplating getting one for our upstairs hallway but I believe they need a lot of natural light. If so, I don't think it is going to work. I'll have to think of another tallish flower/plant.

  3. I love it! I hate those clip too, I usually replace them with raffia too but never thought to add moss too.

  4. I agree flowers always bighten a winter's day:)
This is the time of the year that I treat my self to a weekly bouquet of tulips and potted daffodils!! They make me so happy:)

Plus...I always save the daffodil bulbs and just replant them in the autumn:):)

    Pretty orchids!!!

  5. Simply beautiful! And love the moss idea, minus the hair clip! Are they hard to grow? I love them and have put one in my cart more than once, but terrifed at making the petals fall off! Any tips?

  7. Rene, I love the orchid and how you added the moss and raffia. I need to get a couple of orchids this year and then hope I don't kill them.

  15. almost bought one at the farmers market this weekend...
    almost.

but they seem so high maintenance. are they?

  16. OK so we all agree that orchids are beautiful and I think we all agree that sometimes we can't get them to re-bloom. I have coaxed them to re-bloom a time or two. Are they high maintenance? No. And the way I see it, they cost no more than a bouquet of flowers and the blooms last much longer. When they are through blooming I don't feel guilty throwing them out. Here is a link that might answer some questions.

  17. Rene,
This is a great idea. I usually use the raffia alone, but this is a much better idea.
    Have a great week.

  18. Flowering plants are always a great idea even if you can't get them to rebloom. Thought someone gave me some orchids that he keeps outside and they rebloomed for me this year. Now they are in my garage for the cold days so I have my fingers crossed they make it!

  21. I'm so glad you answered some questions about orchids in your comment section. I had always heard they were fussy. It makes me sad to see something so beautiful die. Maybe I will get brave and buy one. I like your moss idea...it looks very natural!

  22. I too have never bought one fearing I would kill it. I am not very good with live plants. After reading I might have to give it a try :)

  24. I'm not exactly talented at keeping live plants alive, but MAYBE? I could do this? Either way, it's making me think spring and that's something I canNOT wait for. :-)

  28. I absolutely adore orchids and often give them as gifts because they are lovely and I would appreciate receiving one. The little hair clip is funny - I like your moss much better Rene!

  29. Love orchids and have purchased many. I've never had any luck with them reblooming. This doesn’t detour my purchase, since the low price that I can purchase them at our BJ's, is just about the same as a bouquet of flowers and orchids last much longer.
